Dog: A Writer’s Best Friend #MFRWauthor

J.R. Ward has Writer Dog, Neil Gaiman has Cabal, and then there’s John Steinbeck with his dog, Charley. The list of authors who can’t live—or work—without their dogs is long and distinguished.

What launches a dog into author’s best friend status? Just being there. Sometimes it can be them lying beside our desks and snoozing, or placing their muzzles on our thighs when we’re ranting at the computer, or taking a hike with us when we have writer’s block. Sometimes, they’re just an ear for us to work our stories out loud on.

Whatever their job entails given the moment, what never changes is their loyalty.Me, I’ve got SalGal, who hasn’t just been my writing companion, she has moved with me from Maine to Wyoming and all the states I’ve stopped at in-between.

Writing tends to be a lonely and isolated occupation. I think I speak for all authors who can’t do their jobs without their furry friends at their sides, that when accolades  are given, much of the credit should go to the dogs.

    I completely agree!
And it also makes us look less crazy when we’re talking out loud 😉

I don’t know if I look less crazy given the way SalGal looks at me sometimes!

And cats are sooooo helpful 😉 I get lost on Pinterest scrolling through all the funny and so-darn-true pictures.

Agreed. I have two cats, one of whom is helping me write this comment, lol (trying to walk on the keyboard). I’d be lost without my furbabies!

Yeah, I’m sure they think you’ll get lost, too, which is why they are sooooo helpful 😉

I’m not a writer, but I work alone at a computer and wouldn’t survive the day without my canine buddies keeping me company. They remind me to step away and play just when I need it most.

They do remind us to live outside the (computer) box!
