When I write, I need my surroundings to be nearly sensory-free, giving credence to the term “writer’s cave.”
However, when I’m blocked, I rely on music as one of the jackhammers in my arsenal to tear down the wall. I turn on Pandora and boost up “Cake Radio,” which plays music that moves my feet. Then the rest of me follows. Dancing, much like hiking or running, loosens my brain so ideas can flow once again.

Though “flow” might be the wrong term to use when the wall tumbles down. With this kind of music moving through me, I’m hit with snapshots. While I’m jamming around my office, I scratch down the images in shorthand that only I can decipher. Later, I’ll go back and sit at my desk and articulate those “moments” into storyline.
